Fantragic Podcast #58 - Slip Sliding Away

All things sllidey in this episode of the Fantragic Podcast.

We take a look at a series from those busy days in the 1990s when every second show was a sci-fi show and lots of science fictions fans suffered from nervous exhaustion keeping up. One of those shows was Sliders, and the Fantragic team share their memories of it in our popular Nether Regions segment.

In keeping with sliding, our Doctor Who Dump is concerned with an early story that had the team hurtling to oblivion in a runaway TARDIS. Edge of Destruction is our story of choice this episode.

We also review the first two stories from the new season of Doctor Who, and take a look at the DVD releases of Planet of Evil and The Time Meddler.

All this and very much more in episode 58 of Fantragic.

Fantragic Podcast #57 - Chopin's First Podcast

Filmmaker Terry Gilliam is the focus of our podcast this episode, where we devote an entire show to discussing the works of the director of such films as Brazil, 12 Monkeys and The Meaning of Life.

We look at his early career, his start with the Pythons, and his rise as a cult filmmaker with a knack for courting disaster on his film projects, whether it be freak wind storms, actor ailments or budgetary excess.

Fantragic Podcast #56 - Chopin's First Podcast

The podcasts come thick and fast from the Fantragic team, Episode 56 is now available for you to download and enjoy.

And remember, this will be the second last episode advertised on this site - to get the eps past #57 make sure you have the fantragic.com website and/or feed bookmarked! We don't want to lose you!

As always, a lot to discover in this episode, a lot to enjoy, and a lot of discussion to get you thinking.

Our Nether Regions segment, the part of the show where we look at classic TV or film from yesteryear, takes a look at yet another cornerstone of sci-fi adventure, the second film in the most famous trilogy of all time, The Empire Strikes Back.

Continuing the Star Wars flavour, the team tackles a weighty question that explores aspects of the film series that that have up to now not really been answered. Controversial opinions abound!

Our regular foray into Doctor Who continues with the Doctor Who dump segment looking at the first historical story to really have fun with the period, The Reign of Terror.

And you should know by now that there is always more in store than what we advertise, don't you?

Send in your comments, either by leaving something on the comments section of the Fantragic entry for this episode, or via the Fantragic Forum, or send in an mp3 to contact@fantragic.com. We really want to hear from you and feature your feedback in upcoming episodes.

Fantragic Podcast #55 - "For Once I would like to meet a monster that wasn't immune to bullets!"

Welcome to Podcast #55 of Fantragic.com. Soon to be the only website in the universe where you can get an original, authentic hand-made podcast by four sci-fi tragics from Australia.

Remember this will be one of the last times you can get the podcasts from this website - make sure you go over and visit fantragic.com and subscribe to the feed to stay up to date with the podcasts.

In this episode the Fantragic team of Trevor, David, Geoff and Tony look at vulnerabilities, the achilles heel that makes all our heroes just that little bit more believable as they strive to rid the world of evil. The team has a spirited discussion of the different types of vulnerabilities afflicting the heroes of TV and film.

And in keeping with the spirit of all things fallable, our Doctor Who Dump features a story with some monsters that have probably one of the most famous handicap, that of gold! The Fourth Doctor battles the nasty Cybermen in Revenge of the Cybermen.

Our Nether Regions look at a recent but by no means unworthy addition to our memories, Spiderman, a hero with even more susceptibilities than most!.

And in case you are wondering, Tony gets closer to the microphone around the 20 minute mark.

Send in your comments, either by leaving something on the comments section of the Fantragic entry for this episode, or via the Fantragic Forum, or send in an mp3 to contact@fantragic.com.

Fantragic Podcast #54 - Robots, Robots, Robots

Welcome to the first episode of the Fantragic podcast, now housed over at the brand new website - fantragic.com.

MMM Commentaries will no longer be the home for our podcasts, only our commentary tracks will remain on this site.

To ease the transition, for the next few weeks the podcasts will be offered both on MMM Commentaries and Fantragic. You are urged to add the Fantragic site to your favourites, update your feeds (links to the new Fantragic feed are available on the Fantragic site front page) and so forth because after a few weeks the podcasts will be removed from this site and be permanently located at fantragic.com.

In this episode the Fantragic team of Trevor, David, Geoff and Tony look at al things metallic and robotic. Our Doctor Who Dump looks at the first meeting of the Doctor and the Cybermen, The Tenth Planet.

Our Nether Regions delve back and tap into our childhood with the children's comedy favourite, Short Circuit.

And we ask our listeners to share with us their favourite robots. The team has their own ideas on which ones are the best. What are yours?

Send in your comments, either by leaving something on the comments section of the Fantragic entry for this episode, or via the Fantragic Forum, or send in an mp3 to contact@fantragic.com.

Podcast #53

Podcast #53 is the end of an era for MMM Commentaries.

The decision has been made to move our podcasts to a brand new website - fantragic.com. As of episode #54 our podcasts will be on this website. Our commentaries will remain here at mmmcommentaries.com for your downloading pleasure.

But fear not, we will have a transition period for about a month where we will still have the podcasts available on the MMM Commentaries feed and website, to ease you through the change.

With the release of #54, the new fantragic.com website will be up and running (it isn't much to look at right now, so please don't look).

But the last MMM podcast still has plenty of interesting stuff to keep you amused.

In this episode the team has a spirited look at continuity and canon, the bane of any true fan-boys existence. Is it important, do modern shows sacrifice it for the sake of a good story, and does it all really matter anymore?

The Desperates are asked the important question of "Where the hell is my flying car?". Sci-fi has been promising us all these whizz-bang gadgets and innovations - just where are they all?

And don't forget Geoff continues to amaze us with upcoming DVD and cinema releases, all rolled in with the team's trademark banter and breathtaking cynicism.
<37.7mb, 62:22>

Podcast #52

Geoff continues to delight us with upcoming releases, and we also take a look into the not too distant future with what is coming up for 2008.

The randomness of the Doctor Who dump this time takes us back, back, back, back (a little help here guys..) to the very first season of Doctor Who, indeed a story that began the whole historical bent of classic Who, Marco Polo.

It's not often we look at something from our Nether Regions that modern audiences don't have some way of being able to see, but this time we have. Marvel at the cinematic debut of Maxwell Smart, Agent 86 in the Nude Bomb.

We provide a suitable coda to our recent horror filled podcast and our feature length commentary on the first Omen film, with a look at the remaining films from the Omen series.

And I am sure we can squeeze in a little more to round out the show!

We need some more Dear Desperates questions from you - so if you have a moment and have a question that you think needs answering (or in fact have a subject you want to hear the MMM team's opinion on) drop by the forum and leave a post. Earn the respect and silent envy of your mates when you tell them you got name checked on an MMM podcast!
<39.2mb, 70:31>

Podcast #51

A new year, a new podcast, and a new broom.

The MMM podcast gets a bit of a touch-up for 2008 with new theme music, new feel and new voiceover talents.

Unfortunately you are still stuck with the same old MMM presenters of Trevor, David, Geoff and Tony though.

Come explore in our Nether Regions and see us unearth a fondly remembered tv show from all our childhoods - The Time Tunnel. See if you can spot the cunning way we cover up our total lack of knowledge over just how long it ran for.

The Doctor Who Dump goes primeval with caves, reptiles, pretend dinosaurs and disease. Doctor Who and the Silurians goes under the microscope, to see if we can find a cure.

A special bumper What's Up Geoff with not only a look into what is coming up on DVD and in the theatre, but a look back at the year that was and we discuss our favs and not so favs from 2007.
<44.5mb, 78:53>

Podcast #50

Firstly apologies for the lateness of this podcast - Trevor now knows better than to try and edit a show around Christmas time!

It is heartening though to see the posters on the forum excusing this lateness with theories of special treats and goodies in store. And whilst this show is a little late, we have at least been able to deliver on the pressies by giving you a podcast that will keep you happy over the holiday period.

Podcast #50 has a Nether Region for one of the grand-daddies of all sci-fi films - Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

The Doctor Who Dump gets Tony all excited as we cover the first story from the Producer-ship of the most important helmer in Doctor Who's history - Philip Hinchcliffe. We speak of none other than the classic Ark in Space.

In response to listener requests, the MMM boys take a trip down memory lane and have a bit of a look at how MMM got started, how it has kept going, and what is in store for listeners in 2008.

Still in reminisce mode, we take a look at the history of Doctor Who Weekly/Doctor Who Magazine, the publication that for many holds fond memories of a childhood reading Matrix Data Bank, the letters page and the classic story breakdowns. To say nothing of those amazing posters!

Add to this Geoff keeps us informed of things to fill yours, and others Christmas stockings with What's Up Geoff.

So apologies again, but I am sure you will find the show worth the wait.

A Merry Xmas from MMM to all our listeners, your families and friends. We hope to be back buzzing in your ears again in 2008.

Podcast #49

Rumours of our successful elevation to the Australian Federal seat of MMM-ville have been greatly exaggerated, and in fact completely made up.

Yes, MMM is back, with the another podcast from a long line of award winning shows from the team.

Trevor may not be present (settle in the back there ladies), but that doesn't stop Geoff, Tony and David drumming some topics of interest, finding new Nether Regions to explore and again proving just how Desperate, and Dear, we are.

In this episode we peel back the CGI-laden layers of Independence Day and see what is inside the gooey, alien mess.

The new Doctor Who Key to Time box set is with us, and the boys go all ga-ga over the possibility of listening to Mr Baker say "darling" and "gosh" for a whole seasons worth of commentaries. The team gives the listeners the good oil on what to expect for your hard earned dosh when you plump down your money for this one.

The Dear Desperates look at the novel concept of instead of remaking good films, why not have a second stab at the bad films and get them right? Which films, showing potential but were stinkers could the remake wand be waved at to positive effect?

This episode is dedicated to the memory of Verity Lambert, the woman without whom the rich history of Doctor Who wouldn't exist. We owe you all a great debt Verity.

Podcast #48

Prepare to be scared, as MMM take you through our Halloween Special 2007!

Everything here has a fright and a spooky element - we talk with Geoff about upcoming DVD and film releases, my word there are some scary things coming out soon!

In a mini Across the Oeuvre, the team look at what makes a scary movie scary, what makes them less than scary, and why MMM doesn't do more things with clanking chains and ghosts in it.

Our cobwebbed Nether Regions are exposed as we look at one of the finer examples of the horror genre, 28 Days Later.

And we even find a way to bring some bumps in the night to our Dear Desperates question, with a question on Should we Mix our Metaphors?
<43.4mb, 71:35>

Podcast #47

The team revisits our Clear our Cobwebs segment from episode #45 and has a discussion on just how should Blakes 7 be rebooted for a modern audience?

The Doctor Who story we are looking at this month has a distinctly fishy air to it. Behold the Patrick Troughton tale with mad scientists, kelp, trade unionists and lost cities. See what the MMM team think of The Underwater Menace.

Our Nether Regions get a good probing this episode with our look at the classic 70s series, The Six Million Dollar Man.

One of our listeners has asked us just why Adric is so hated. So we devote a Dear Desperates segment to that thorny issue - is Matthew Waterhouse a truly terrible actor or was he just written that way?

We also find time to look at the latest batch of Doctor Who DVD releases, Time Flight, Arc of Infinity and The Time Warrior.

And don't forget we want to get a bit of a regular mailbag going on the show, so send your mp3 files (preferred) or emails into contact@mmmcommentaries.com. Get your name read out on the show and feel the warm glow of global recognition and fleeting fame.

We still want to hear from you about your favourite Dalek memories. Email the team or send us in a voicemail (mp3 to contact@mmmcommentaries.com). We will collect all your feedback and have a special MMM Mailbag in an episode very soon.

Podcast #46

Are you sitting comfortably? Good. Because we have a lot to get through today in a jam-packed show with interviews, competitions and segments.

Podcast #46 has not one, not three, not seven, but two competitions with great prizes up for grabs to some lucky MMM listeners.

In conjunction with this podcast's interview with Nick Griffiths, author of Dalek I Loved You, we have a copy of his book to give away. Check out the interview for more details on how to win.

We also have a copy of ARRRRR Roberts book, Doctor Whom to give away. You might remember we spoke to Mr Roberts in Podcast #45. All the details on how to win this funny little book are in the podcast.

As for the regular stuff, we come to the first, and best Doctor Who producer, Verity Lambert. The MMM team cast their eye over the producer that guided the show through its formative years.

Still keeping with the Doctor Who flavour, our random Doctor Who review this time is the first part of the Season 23 Trial of a Timelord extravaganza, The Mysterious Planet.

Our Nether Regions are well and truly exposed as we look at a TV series, that for Australian Doctor Who fans is very much a part of the tea-time experience as much as the TARDIS was, that classic comedy The Goodies.

In our Clear our Cobwebs segment, we ask you to help us with something. Blakes 7 - how would you reboot the series and what format would such a reboot take?

And don't forget we want to get a bit of a regular mailbag going on the show, so send your mp3 files (preferred) or emails into contact@mmmcommentaries.com. Get your name read out on the show and feel the warm glow of global recognition and fleeting fame.

We still want to hear from you about your favourite Dalek memories. Email the team or send us in a voicemail (mp3 to contact@mmmcommentaries.com). We will collect all your feedback and have a special MMM Mailbag in an episode very soon.
<42.0mb, 73:30>

Podcast #45

Good things come to those who wait, and we want to thank our faithful listeners for bearing with us while #45 was given an extra spit and polish.

We have another packed show for you to enjoy while on the train, on the bus, or lying on the beach.

One of our regular forum posters Joel phones up to share with us his Dear Desperate question, the thorny issue of Doctor Who's guilty pleasures. What are the stories that aren't particularly highly regarded but you still watch them over and over? See if your favourite Doctor Who story is rated by the team as a guilty pleasure!

We continue our look at the Doctor Who DVD releases with Timelash, the ahem, classic Colin Baker story.

Now that the last Harry Potter book is out and has been voraciously devoured by a waiting world, the team take a look back at the book series and the five movies. How well have the books translated to the big screen, and what does the future hold for Mr Potter?

We continue our series of interviews with a lively chat with ARRRRR Roberts, author of the Doctor Who parody book, Doctor Whom.

Our look back into the back catalogue of Doctor Who and cast our critical eye over the third season story Galaxy Four.

We are coming to the business end of our comprehensive look at the Doctor Who producers, with a look this episode at two producers who might not have had long to make their mark, but still left their own indelible impression on the show, Derrick Sherwin and John Wiles.

As you can see, we have a lot for you this episode, and as a result this show is another bumper edition.

We still want to hear from you about your favourite Dalek memories. Email the team or send us in a voicemail (mp3 to contact@mmmcommentaries.com). We will collect all your feedback and have a special MMM Mailbag in an episode very soon.
<73.3mb, 104:02>

Podcast #44

We devote this entire show to a look at the Doctor's most fearsome enemies, creatures that back in 1963 ensured that the show moved beyond it's proposed 6 week run into a series that is still going strong in the new milennium.

The Daleks are the focus of this podcast, a special Across the Oeuvre spanning their first appearance in 1963 and right up to date with the latest incarnation in the 2007 series. We leave no Skarosian stone unturned in our look at the pepperpots.

Never fear, all our regular segments are still there, but they all have a distinctly Dalek flavour.

We would love to hear from you about your favourite Dalek memories. Email the team or send us in a voicemail (mp3 to contact@mmmcommentaries.com). We will collect all your feedback and have a special MMM Mailbag in an episode very soon.

Podcast #43

A bumper two hour show for our faithful listeners this time - we have a lot of things we want to share with you and discuss.

We step right into a discussion on what the MMM team thought of the Simpsons movie, and have our say on the controversial "willy" scene. The fur will fly!

Our Doctor Who producers series continues with a man who is often forgotten on the road to where we are now - Philip Segal, the producer of the 1996 telemovie starring Paul McGann.

We have a chat with David May, author of Views from Behind the Sofa, a fascinating book on what it's like to be a Doctor Who fan. David has collected thoughts, reminisces, memories and trivia from a wide range of fans and compiled them togehter in this book. A must for any fan who gets the occasional burst of nostalgia. The book can be ordered from Lulu, Amazon, or from any local retailer (ISBN 978-1-84753-851-2).

We go sequel crazy as we pull from our Nether Regions another film in the Back to the Future series - Back to the Future Part 2.

We attempt to answer in our Dear Desperates section "Just Who is Yoda?"

We also finally get around to reviewing the rest of the Season 3 episodes of Doctor Who, and give our thoughts on the season overall.

Throw in a review of the Robot DVD and that pretty much rounds out an exciting podcast.
<65.7mb, 123:33>

Podcast #42

Welcome all to Podcast #42, which of course is named after that incredibly famous, earth-shattering, iconic episode of the Doctor Who 2007 series.

In this episode we continue the Doctor Who flavour and have a chat about the new range of Doctor Who novels from Virgin and then the BBC which continued and expanded upon the journeys of our favourite Time Lord. Peter joins us again and shares his encyclopedic knowledge of these book ranges. It helps enormously that Peter is probably the only person on the planet dedicated enough to have actually read them all too.

Temporarily abandoning the Doctor Who flavour we dig deep into our Nether Regions and look at the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

But we just right back on the bandwagon with a Dear Desperates question that asks "What Doctor Who novels would make great tv episodes?"

We revisit our Clear our Cobwebs poser of what historical periods should the Doctor visit?

The Doctor Who Dump looks at a story on which the MMM team can be in complete unision with our opinion of it - cause none of us have actually seen it - Patrick Troughton's second story and Frazer Hines first - The Highlanders.

Throw into the digital mix Transformers, commentary updates and you will have to admit that #42 is yet another worthy entry into the MMM pantheon.

And not a Douglas Adams mention in sight.
<45.3mb, 79:16>

Podcast #41

If you love Doctor Who, then podcast #41 is for you. We have Doctor Who coming out the whazoo. If we aren't talking about the latest Doctor Who episodes, we are talking about the classic Target range of novels, and even having a stab at providing some focus to the Graham Williams era as Producer.

As you can see, Doctor Who is high on the agenda this podcast.

We are nearing the end of our look at all of the Doctor Who producers. This podcast Graham Williams is discussed, an era often derided by fans as trash, but a time where Doctor Who enjoyed its highest ratings during the original run.

Growing Up Target is the MMM team's look at what was for quite some time the only source of information on the Doctor Who universe - the Target range of novelisations. Before the internet, before the VCR, even before Doctor Who magazine started taking an interest in anything that was two years older than the issue cover date, the Target novelisations were lapped up by fans, desperate to learn about stories made before they were even born.

Try your hand at the Target Book Quiz - see if you can outwit the mighty brains of MMM!

We continue our look at Season 3 of the new Doctor Who series where we review the stories Daleks in Manhattan through to Family of Blood.

Add to the mix movie reviews, Geoff guides us through the new releases in film and DVD land, and Podcast #41 is a bumper crop ready for the picking. Enjoy.

And, for the first time ever, there is no Trevor in this episode.

That'll get the downloads flowing.
